Tag der Deutschen Einheit
Because it's the 3rd of October, which means it's one of the few days I'm actually remembered of my nationality...

I don't care much about politics, but this date is of a great historical importance, even to me. I always forget just how many friends I have that were still born in the DDR and that I would've never gotten to know if history would've been different.

I just thought that all my German girls can celebrate at the reactionpost over at merlin_de tonight...and what better way to celebrate? ;-)

And now a short link list to some of my favourite German Songs:

Und wenn ein Lied (with English subtitles)
Bon Voyage
Liebe ist

And because it's probably the best known German song ever
99 Luftballons
Current Mood: calmcalm
Current Music: 99 Luftballons - Nena

*celebrates like mad today* :D

wiccaqueen: Merlin - All for youwiccaqueen on October 3rd, 2009 06:57 pm (UTC)

Haha I remember 99 Luftballoons!!! They changed it to "99 Red Balloons" in English to make it fit the rhythmn of the song.

I love "Und wenn ein Leid" - its a beautiful song, I love the message in it (although I need the English subtitles hee hee, my schooldays German is just too rusty!)

Most of the German songs I am used to are 19th Century Lieder by the likes of Schumann etc so its nice to hear some modern German songs (hehe the only German band I know of otherwise are Die Toten Hosen - I actually had one of their cds ages ago :P)
wiccaqueen: Merlin - Colin & Bradley Rockin Itwiccaqueen on October 3rd, 2009 07:33 pm (UTC)
Yeah I also remember the English version of that song, though I always preferred the original version.

You had German in school???
Yeah that song is great, most of Xavier Naidoos songs are. At least they all have a great message.

Die Toten Hosen! I have some friends who are fans, but I never really listened to them. I only know their most famous songs like: 'Alles nur aus Liebe', 'Hier kommt Alex' or 'Zehn kleine Jägermeister'...would link them, but youtube has decided to stop working right now! ARGH!

Hee hee yeah I had 3 years of German in School and it was my favourite language, but in my school we had to choose either German or French and my teachers really pressured me to choose French, which I regret as I didn't get on well with it. And I've not used it since leaving school. I can understand a little German but am not confident to post it in because I have trouble constructing sentences!

We also had to learn Welsh at school lol. And although I live in Wales I've never used that much either because I don't live in an area where Welsh is really spoken.

I used to really like Die Toten Hosen (I thought the lead singer was cute - Campino isn't it? lol) I had a couple of their cds lol.

Most of the German I do these days is German Lieder in my singing lessons and I do sometimes struggle with pronounciation although its getting better (am tempted to do a voice post with me reading some German so you girls can pick it to pieces lol). German is a hard language to sing in sometimes although I personally find it easier than Italian.

German is also really good for rapping apparently lol, because its like English (so quite "guttural")
wiccaqueen: Merlin - Colin & Bradley Rockin Itwiccaqueen on October 3rd, 2009 07:59 pm (UTC)
Threee years? Well that's not bad. But I can imagine that's it must be hard to learn, not one of the easiest languages, though it is close to English, language history wise.
The grammar and sentence structure is very different to English.

Yeah I heard about learning Welsh at school and imagine that must be pretty cool, but not much when you actually have to learn it as a child I guess ;-)

Campino! He was awesome, though I'm afraid he didn't age that well

Voice post! I'm all for it of course XD
It would be amazing to hear you sing something, doesn't even have to be in German ;-)

Yup it's quite 'gutteral'
We also have a few famous rappers, but I don't really care for them, because most of them appear very anti-gay
Here's one song that could be called rap which I kinda like:

(Hamma is a rather new word for someone being awesome and sexy)
Osolone: slash_flyosolone on October 3rd, 2009 08:33 pm (UTC)
Yes the sentence structure is the hardest thing about German. I would like to go back to take classes and re-learn it as I always enjoyed it a lot when I learned it at school. Its a language which I always enjoyed expressing myself in!

The only time I use Welsh these days is nursery rhymes etc with Arthur. There is a really good school nearby where we live which teaches everything through the medium of Welsh and I'm considering sending Arthur there although not sure how he will get on, as he's not from a Welsh-speaking background. This part of Wales is 99.9% English speaking, Welsh is more likely to be used in remote/rural areas in the North and the West. My Welsh is pretty poor and I can only manage nursery rhymes and things like that lol.

I thought Campino was cute when he was younger lol

I'm so self concious about my singing voice these days, have been meaning to do a singing post for aaaaages! But even if I'm not brave enough to do thatI might just read something in German so you can pick my pronounciation apart lol. My main lack of confidence when it comes to singing in German is that I don't pronounce it properly.

I love rap in German it sounds amazing, lol. I'm not a rap fan normally (I'm a rock chick hehee as you know!) but some rap is OK. I agree that a lot of it is homophobic though - well, the American gangster-stuff often is. We have a lot of British rap bands in the UK, often London- based, but they are not so bad with the homophobia and a lot of them are working-class kids who have worked their way up and have very positive/inspiring messages for young people, like working hard and staying away from drugs etc. N-Dubz are pretty good:

There was also a really silly, funny Welsh rap band called "Goldie Lookin' Chain" from my hometown of Newport, Gwent, South Wales. They were like a jokey/satire rap band but pretty amusing back in the day lol:

Rap sounds so stupid in a Welsh accent *facepalm* lol

wiccaqueen: Stock - GnRwiccaqueen on October 4th, 2009 10:11 am (UTC)
I just read about the Welsh speaking regions in my rough guide book ;-)
I think it would be great if you could send Arthur to such a school. It will probably be easier if he learns if from an early age on. And I'm all for trying to keep these old languages alive.

Sure reading something would also be great. Do you think it's easier to pronounce the words while reading them in comparison to singing them? Just curious :-)

*listening to N-Dubz*
Yeah I live with Rap like that. But for me that kind of music is more like Rap mixed with Pop or something.
German Rap generally seems to me more like Eminem :-/

*listens to Goldie Lookin' Chain*
That does sound a bit funny XD
I believe I feel the same way when I hear someone rap in a specific German accent

Back to Toten Hosen: I found my favourite song...it's just a stupid party song, but one of their best known ones

English translation is on the sidebar info if you click on more info
